I love the winter! Even in sunny California, there’s something
excitingly special about the joy, warmth, glitter and sparkle of the
holiday season! I’m always inspired to decorate my home to reflect
this wonderful time of year.
But how can you “dress” your home in style without breaking the bank?
Well, I do most of my purchasing at thrift stores (e.g. Goodwill and
Salvation Army), and discount stores (e.g. Big Lots, Marshall’s, TJMaxx,
and Ross) throughout the year. Someone’s junk has become my treasure on
many a planned and unplanned shopping expedition.
My living room had a winter theme centered around the red Cardinal bird.
I found most of the bird items at thrift stores for less than $2.00. A
cardinal candle holder ($2.00-Goodwill) sat atop my armoire. Two
cardinal wreaths adorned my front door ($12 and $10 – TJMaxx). Above my
fireplace was a glittery stencil of Cardinals ($5.00 after Xmas sale last
year-TJMaxx).
To highlight the birds and bring the “sparkle” into my
living room I purchased two tree branch lights ($12.99 each from
Marshall’s) and placed them in my fireplace behind the screen. That soft
glow combined with the lighted pine scented garland (scented sticks
$1.00- Big Lots) and soft holiday jazz playing in the background (CD
$1.00 –Salvation Army store) , made my living room a warm and inviting
space created for well under $100!
Many holiday items are on clearance sale through the end of January at
major stores and specialty stores (Pier 1 and World Market) for
unbelievable bargain prices. But, don’t go in and pick up anything- have
a theme in mind. And throughout this New Year, as you travel, shop, walk
or run near a thrift shop or discount store, stop in and browse for a
while - you never know what you can pick up now that the holiday season
is over.
